The Lignum Sound
As a drummer, you know the sound you want, but you may not know how best to achieve it. Because Lignum Drums are high-end, custom hand-crafted drums, I can help you to find the right set using my knowledge gained from years of wood-working and drum building experience. With a Lignum drum set, you can rest easy, knowing you have drums with the purest possible tone.
Lignum's stave drums have a natural tone that is lower than plywood drums with a huge tuning range. No more searching for that elusive 'sweet spot' that is often the problem with other drums. Add to this the fact that each Lignum drum set starts out from the same piece of wood and you have a set with unsurpassed tone characteristics that stay true across the whole set.
To back up the idea that Lignum drums have a lower fundamental tone, we did some tests, including this one :
We took a major-brand 24x18" bass drum and - using the same head type, tuning and room acoustics - compared it to a Lignum 22x17" bass drum. In that room were drummers, musicians and non-musicians and everyone could clearly hear the difference in tone and commented on the 'room-filling' projection of the Lignum drum!
Building drums with stave method, means that the sound is always pure and maintained throughout construction; unlike plywood, which is 'forced' into shape. This also means that the different sound qualities of differing woods can truly be heard. If you ever thought birch is not as warm as maple, think again!
Only when drums are made of solid wood, is it possible to make true comparisons.
Lignum in the studio
Many engineers and producers already recognise the superior sound of Lignum drums and many studios made the unusual step of investing in a set for permanent use, as they love the warm and wide range of sound achievable without having to resort to loads of compression or EQ. Often they record the whole set with just overhead mics as the tone and projection is so good, no other mics are needed.
Hardware
Many high-end manufacturers , even when they put great effort into their shells, still compromise by using sub-standard or generic hardware. Not so here at Lignum.
I produce my own solid brass lugs, for example. Tom suspension mounts are Gauger Aluminium RIMS or Lignum rims. Our tom bracket is a universal style that fits all standard L-arm systems such as DW, Gibraltar, Tama, etc. I will also make you a tom without any mount to place on a snare stand, if that is your preference.

Lignum lugs
Lignum lugs are solid, turned brass. Brass is considered by many to be the best material sonically, for use on drums.
The lugs are polished by hand and chromed by the top chrome company in Flanders. Brass is known to be the best and most stable base for chrome work and, of course, brass does not rust, which means you won't experience the pitting often associated with chrome placed over steel.
